Rich Julius, Chief Information Architect

With over 20 years experience in digital communication, user interface design, and information architecture, Rich Julius is one of the foremost experts in the design of corporate web sites and web-based applications. His specialty is designing usability into web interfaces while adhering to principles of goal-focused design, where user goals are placed in perspective against key business goals.

Rich has just completed a two-year stint as CTO of New Media News, owned by billionaire J. Joseph Ricketts, where he launched the successful New York news startup Under Rich's direction, DNAinfo grew from an idea to a hyperlocal news powerhouse serving over 1 million visitors per month. DNAinfo was listed by Business Insider as one of the “6 hottest journalism startups of 2010.”

Previously a Partner and VP of Interactive Technology at Crimson Consulting Group, Rich led web and mobile projects for BEA, Cisco, McKesson, and Seagate. Rich continues to provide occasional consulting services for Crimson clients today.

Rich has helped define information architecture for some of the world's leading technology companies. In the 1990's he served as a project manager at PeopleSoft, Director of User Assistance at Oracle Corporation, Director of Knowledge Systems at Informix Software, Director of Consulting Engineering at Perspecta, and Information Architect at Marketing Solutions Software (MS2).

As Chief Information Architect, Rich has spent over 12 years designing, building, and maintaining major corporate intranets, extranets, portals, and web applications for companies ranging from high-tech giants Applied Materials, Cisco Systems, Harmonic Inc., Seagate Technologies, and Verizon, to more traditional companies in insurance, real estate, and health.

In addition to serving as chairman of the board of Specific Impulse, Rich is chairman and managing director of iMedia Revenue (Ireland) Ltd. A dual Irish-American citizen, Rich also served as CEO and MD for EireBusiness and AllEire Ltd., Ireland's largest eBusiness directory portal, whose property received European Union grant funding in 2006.

Founder of UC Berkeley Extension's Technical Communication program in 1995, Rich went on to teach Digital Communication and Information Architecture courses for UCBE for over five years. He also served for three years as President of the Berkeley chapter of the Society for Technical Communication.

Rich holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan, where he later served on the faculty of the Department of English before his career in Silicon Valley high-tech.
